Weaving together research, creative writing and commuity work with Koko Hubara

In this episode, Ameera speaks with doctoral researcher, author, teacher of creative writing, and activist Koko Hubara about the inseparable connections between her personal life, research, and political engagement. Koko reflects on how experiences of motherhood, mixed-race identity, and interest in Black feminist thought have shaped her research, racism within the intimate sphere of the mother–daughter relationships. She discusses founding Ruskeat Tytöt Media (Brown Girls Media) and the platform’s lasting impact on antiracist discourse, community-building, and conversations about race in Finland. Koko also shares how her political work has shifted to organizing in Palestine solidarity activism through Nahlieli – Jews for Justice in Palestine and Sumud – The Finnish Palestine Network. Throughout the conversation, she considers what meaningful activism looks like beyond performance, emphasizing the importance of unlearning, community work, and connecting research to personal experiences and political struggles.
